postheadericon How Much Did James Reimer Improve in 2013?

A lot has been made about the progress of Eli Wilson Goaltending student James Reimer, and how his improved play helped the Toronto Maple Leafs make the playoffs for the first time in nine years. He finished the season with a .924 save percentage and ranked in the league's top 10 in most meaningful goaltending statistics.

Some have suggested that Reimer has benefited from coach Randy Carlyle's new system that pushes shots to the outside, but the facts show otherwise. According to analysis done by Pension Plan Puppets, an on-line Maple Leafs fan community, the Leafs actually allowed 1.56 shots more per game in 2013, and these shots came from closer to the net, a far more dangerous place for shooters to hit the target.

Yet despite the increase in both shots and shot quality, James Reimer improved his statistics and established himself as the team's number one netminder. His game took a major leap forward in 2013, and the 24 year-old second year NHL'er still has plenty of opportunity to develop even further. He will continue to do so in the off-season, working with goaltending coach Eli Wilson.

During the NHL lockout, Reimer and Wilson spent time together working on fundamentals like active feet movement, hand placement, and mental shot and game preparation. Eli Wilson brings the same approach to training whether he is working with an NHL star like James Reimer or a young goalie in minor hockey, and his track record is phenomenal. He has trained and coached 28 goalies at the NHL level and had over 50 goalies who play at the highest levels... pro, major junior, NCAA Div 1, or Canadian University hockey last year alone.

This summer Eli Wilson will be hosting a number of goaltending camps in Canada and the US. If you'd like to elevate your play the same way James Reimer did, with the same coach and the same techniques.

postheadericon GOALIES FIGURE PROMINENTLY IN WHL DRAFT

Edmonton goaltending prospect Stuart Skinner made it impossible for the Lethbridge Hurricanes to risk losing him.

His play with the Southside Athletic Association Bantam AAA team was stellar this past season, and in a rare first-round move the Hurricanes grabbed him with the 17th pick and made him the first goalie selected in the draft. Goalies are rarely chosen in the first round of the WHL Bantam draft.

Stuart has been training with goalie coach Eli Wilson for several years, and credits Wilson with making his game faster and better, and challenging him to rise to the elite status.

Skinner wasn't the only one of Eli Wilson's students to be drafted this year. Highly-touted prospect Ryan Kubic of Selkirk, Manitoba was drafted in the second round by the Saskatoon Blades. Kubic is an athletic goaltender with strong reflexes and excellent rebound control. Expectations for Ryan are high, and he will continue to work with Eli in the off season to improve all aspects of his game.

Edmonton goalie Hunter Lorenson was also drafted, going to Swift Current in the 5th round. Hunter played last season with the Maple Leaf Athletic Club Bantam AAA team, and has trained with Eli for several years.

Watching three of his students get drafted was rewarding for Eli, as was learning that 50% of the top 6 goalies chosen in the Bantam draft were his students. "I'm very honoured, but not surprised," said Wilson. "These goalies bring the determination and work ethic. I simply help them direct it in ways to elevate their game."

Eli Wilson will be working with these goalies at various camps across Canada and the US this summer, and there are spots available at the camps for goalies of all ages and skill levels. You can reserve your spot now at Register Now. Book quickly though, because positions in these camps will fill up quickly.

Eli can only offer a limited number of open camps in the off season, as he has commitments to work with NHL goalies including James Reimer, Cory Schneider, Carey Price, and Ray Emery, as well as many other professional, major junior, and US college goalies.

postheadericon Eric Comrie – Eli Wilson Goaltending Student Looks to go High in this Year’s NHL Draft

Eric Comrie - Tri-City Americans

The Tri-City Americans have only ever selected goalies in the first round of the WHL draft twice. The first time they landed Carey Price, who has gone on to a stellar career in Montreal. The second time they drafted Eric Comrie. With the track record of Price to live up to, there is no question that Comrie went into this season under tremendous pressure.

He has responded brilliantly, posting a 2.62 GAA and .915 save percentage through 37 games so far this season. What did Eric Comrie do in the off-season to prepare himself for this pivotal season in his career? He focused on improving every aspect of his game, spending time with renowned goaltending coach Eli Wilson. Eli found Eric to be remarkably coachable, one of the most focused, driven, hard working goaltenders and one of the nicest young goalies, that Eli has worked with in his career. And Eli has worked with the best of them.

Although Eric is from Newport Beach, CA, he has Canadian citizenship and plays for Canada internationally. Although his young age makes him a long shot, he will no doubt get some consideration for the Canadian World Junior Hockey Championships training camp in December.

Going into the draft, Comrie is the second ranked North American goaltender. GM Bob Tory of The Tri-City Americans believes his young star will exceed expectations. "Unbelievable. He's a special goalie boy, we're very lucky. I was really happy for him at the Subway Series too, coming in cold like that is not easy. He's right in the same mix as Carey Price and Dan Blackburn - just a great work ethic with a real humble personality.”

"Thank you for working with Eric this past summer. He really enjoy the experience of working with you. Your drills are second to none. Add this to your expert eye and attention to detail, you end up with a great goalie session. The shooters were excellent and challenged Eric in many different game like situations that you directed." Bill Comrie

Congratulations to Eli Wilson Goaltending Student Eric Comrie.
